One of my favourite parts of Christmas is Christmas Eve, all cosy around the fire with a Christmas film on the TV – usually has to be Love Actually but Elf and Jingle All the Way are also popular choices! Then once it’s time for bed getting those stocking hung up. It was always a wondrous time when my boys were little – the excitement of putting out the stockings together with mince pies and a glass of something nice for Santa. And don’t forget carrots for Rudolph and the team. Well, now my boys are all grown up but they still like a stocking (the same ones they’ve had since they were born) and they do one for us too – the ones I do are filled with little presents which I can collected over the months - some silly, some chocolatey and some a little more thoughtful and special. This year my son’s girlfriend is going to be with us and so I get the chance to create a ‘girls’ stocking which is a new thing for me!
So where does the tradition of hanging stockings come from? Although there are no written records of the origin, the popular legend is that the original Saint Nicholas put gold coins in the stockings of three poor sisters. Their father would not accept charity, so St Nicholas decided to help in secret. One night, the girls left their stockings to dry over the fireplace. Saint Nicholas knew the family was very poor and risked starvation, so he threw three bags of gold coins down the chimney. The money landed in the sisters' stockings, much to their absolute joy on waking in the morning.
This led to the custom of children hanging stockings or putting out shoes, eagerly awaiting gifts from Saint Nicholas. Sometimes the story is told with gold balls instead of bags of gold. That is why three gold balls, are one of the symbols for St. Nicholas.
