Sun-Kissed Escapes: Summer Holidays

From: 3rd July 2024

Summer is the season of rejuvenation, adventure, and relaxation. It's the perfect time to escape from the daily grind and explore new places, whether you're looking to relax on a beach, embark on an active adventure, or enjoy quality time with your family. I’ve got a bit of both this summer – away with my husband and two grown up sons to New York for a few days to celebrate a 60th (not mine yet!) and 21st birthday. Think this might be a bit exhausting (especially with the boys in charge) so then heading to Greece in August for a lazing round the pool week, just the two of us. So, why don’t we have a look at the wonderous range of summer holidays you can enjoy, top destinations in the UK and abroad, and essential packing tips to ensure a hassle-free experience. (I’m going hand luggage only so need some good packing tips) We'll also touch on the latest summer fashion trends and highlight the handmade silver jewellery from Cavendish French, perfect for accessorizing your summer outfits.

Types of Summer Holidays

1. Beach Holidays

We all start thinking about our summer holidays as soon as Christmas is over – it’s a way to help us through the dark, cold months of January and February which seem to go on for ever. Beach holidays are synonymous with summer. There's nothing quite like lounging on golden sands, basking in the sun, and listening to the soothing sound of waves. Popular beach destinations include the Mediterranean coast, the Caribbean islands, and Southeast Asia. In the UK, beaches in Cornwall, Devon, and the Isle of Wight offer stunning seaside escapes with picturesque beaches, quaint fishing villages and fabulous Cornish pasties, cream teas and seafood.

2. Active Holidays

I think I’m naturally lazy for my summer holiday although I do enjoy site seeing on city breaks and we had an amazing holiday touring Japan a few years ago but I’m not really a cycle around Thailand or hike the length of Scotland kind of girl. But many can’t sit still and relax but crave adventure and physical activity, and for them, active holidays are ideal. These can range from hiking in the Alps, cycling through the Netherlands, surfing in Hawaii, to skiing in the Southern Hemisphere. The Lake District in the UK is a fantastic destination for hiking and climbing, while the Scottish Highlands offer rugged landscapes for outdoor enthusiasts.

3. Family Holidays

Family holidays are all about creating lasting memories but do vary hugely depending on the age of your children. My children were happiest with a swimming pool, beach for sandcastles and endless ice creams when they were little so family-friendly resorts were perfect. Special holidays could be a trip to theme parks such as Euro Disney or Florida with Universal Studios. I will never forget visiting Euro Disney when my youngest son was about 3 years old and thought all the characters were real. Truly magical and special memories.  As they get older cultural trips offer something for everyone - maybe a city tour to Athens or a touring holiday across Vietnam.  In the UK, Legoland Windsor, the Yorkshire Dales, and the Scottish lochs are great for family adventures.

4. Adult-Only Holidays

For a more tranquil and sophisticated experience, adult-only holidays are perfect. These holidays are definitely my holiday of choice these days, tailored for relaxation and luxury without the hustle and bustle (and shrieking) of family activities. Spa resorts, boutique hotels, and cruises (not for me… I’d feel sick) would all be great choices. Santorini with its breathtaking sunsets, white-washed buildings, and crystal-clear waters, the Maldives which offer a mix of beautiful beaches, lush landscapes, and vibrant culture and the Cotswolds or Spa hotels in the UK are excellent choices for an adult-only retreat.

Your Ultimate Summer Holiday Capsule Wardrobe: Pack Like a Pro!

Ready for that summer getaway but dreading the packing process? Say no more. I’ve got the same problem - hand luggage for 2 weeks is going to be a challenge! I’ll share my thoughts on the ultimate summer holiday capsule wardrobe guide. This is all about being efficient, stylish, and, most importantly, stress-free.

The Basics: Keep It Simple

First things first, you don’t need your entire closet. Trust me. A capsule wardrobe is all about versatility and essentials without overpacking. Here’s what you need:

1.Tops (4-5):

  • 2 T-shirts: One plain and one with a fun graphic or print.
  • 1 Tank Top: Perfect for layering or wearing solo.
  • 1 Blouse: For those dressier dinners or day trips.
  • 1 Lightweight Jumper or Cardigan: For those cool summer nights.

2.Bottoms (3-4):

  • 1 Pair of Shorts: Denim or linen, your choice!
  • 1 Pair of Lightweight Trousers: Something comfy yet chic.
  • 1 Skirt: Midi or mini, whatever floats your boat.
  • 1 Pair of Leggings: Great for travel days or lounging.

3.Dresses (2-3):

  • 1 Casual Sundress: Easy to throw on and go.
  • 1 Maxi Dress: Can be dressed up or down.
  • 1 Little Black Dress: Because you never know when you’ll need it!

4.Swimwear (2-3):

  • 2 Swimsuits: Mix and match tops and bottoms.
  • 1 Cover-up: Something stylish to take you from beach to bar.

Shoes: Keep It Light and Comfy

Shoes can be a suitcase killer, so keep it minimal:

  • 1 Pair of Sandals: Perfect for day-to-night wear. Maybe go for a bit of sparkle.
  • 1 Pair of Trainers: For exploring or travel days.
  • 1 Pair of Flip-Flops or Sliders: Beach essentials.

Accessories: The Cherry on Top

Accessories can seamlessly take your outfit from day to night. For a casual day look, pair a simple dress with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. Transition to evening by adding statement jewellery, such as a bold Cavendish French necklace or a pair of  elegant earrings. The right accessories can make even the simplest outfit look chic and polished.

Choose your accessories wisely:

  • Sunglasses: Stylish shades that also protect your eyes.
  • Hat: A straw hat or a baseball cap – go for wide brims to protect that face!
  • Scarf/Sarong: Multi-use magic. Use it as a beach cover-up, scarf, or even a head wrap.
  • Tote Bag: Big enough for the beach but chic enough for city strolls.
  • Crossbody Bag: For hands-free exploring.
  • Jewellery: Keep it simple. Think statement drop silver earrings or simple solitaire studs for days on the beach, a couple of cubic zirconia necklaces, and a bracelet or silver bangle. Silver jewellery from Cavendish French is perfect for summer. Handmade designs set with sparkling cubic zirconia stones that sparkle like real diamonds, allowing you to leave your precious gems at home without compromising on style. With a wide range of designs and colours there is something for every occasion from beach outings, city tours or evening dinners. Toiletries: Travel-Sized Everything

Don’t lug around full-sized products. If you’re traveling with just hand luggage everything must be under 100ml so take travel-sized versions or use refillable bottles:

  • Sunscreen: SPF is your best friend!
  • Moisturizer: Keep your skin hydrated, especially when you've been in the sun all day.
  • Shampoo/Conditioner: Travel-sized or solid bars to save space.
  • Toothbrush/Toothpaste: Basic but essential.
  • Minimal Makeup: A light foundation, mascara, lip balm, and a touch of blush.

Packing Tips: Efficiency is Key

  • Roll, Don’t Fold: Rolling your clothes saves space and keeps them wrinkle-free.
  • Vacuum Packing Bags: These are a game-changer for organization and saving space.
  • Shoes First: Place them at the bottom of your suitcase.
  • Fill in the Gaps: Stuff socks, undies, and accessories in shoes or corners.
  • Wear Your Bulkiest Items: If you’re bringing a jacket or heavier shoes, wear them during travel to save space.
